A modern CCTV system consist of three four components; Cameras, recording hardware, management software and cabling/connection network.
Cameras which are HD (720, 1080 & 4K). When selecting cameras, the resolution is a major consideration but cameras ability to produce an image in low light, direct light and changing light is important to understand as well. Viewing angle, zoom, fixed, vandal, indoor, IP rating, there are many factors to consider when selecting the correct camera for a particular installation.
An VMS (Video Management System) provides the software layer to help manage the video and generally loaded onto a Windows Server and workstation to provide this interface. A VMS provides a very scalable and flexible system for multiple cameras but has an ongoing management required to maintain this type of environment. Generally, VMS use NAS (Network Attached Storage) or inbuilt server storage for the video retention. A VMS system is very flexible with type and manufacturer of cameras that can be connected to the system.
An NVR (Network Video Recorder) provides an integrated solution for the management and storage of video. It is an appliance that comes with an inbuilt operating systems and is configured in the factory by the product manufacturer. Most NVR solutions are best deployed as an end to end solution from a single manufacturer for NVR and cameras. We have found NVR’s are best suited to smaller systems (up to 64 cameras) and provide a great environment for set and forget type installations.
